For one day only, our gallery exhibition Valentin van Orley and His World: A Rediscovery in Netherlandish Painting travels to Westminster Abbey for the second edition of Studiolo.
This exhibition centres on a major rediscovery: a panel painting of the Presentation in the Temple (c. 1500) by the Brussels painter Valentin van Orley (c. 1470–1535). Unpublished and shown to an international public for the first time, the work significantly expands the limited corpus associated with this important figure of Netherlandish art.
The painting is presented with a focused display of sculpture and works of art that illustrate the development of art in Flanders throughout the fifteenth century, including a finely cast figure of Saint Francis, attributed to the Brussels founder Renier van Thienen (active c. 1465-1498) and a rare limestone figure of a Deacon Saint from the workshop of Claus de Werve (c. 1380–1439).
